Boy Falls From The Sky - Reeve Carney (Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark)

I’m curious:  Where do you guys stand for this show?

Personally, I’m not a fan.  [That could be because I am a bit of a Broadway purist within reason AND I am a huge Spiderman purist.]  But I like this song.

I don’t see it talked about much in a legitimate way more than “lol who got hurt today lol” and would love to hear your opinions.

“Two By Two” - The Book of Mormon

119

Here’s the answers to today’s trivia!

  1. C — the rams and ewes are in Carousel’s “June Is Busting Out All Over.”  The other beasties are in the following Oklahoma! songs: the hawk, “Oklahoma!”; the lark, “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top”; the field mouse, “Lonely Room”; the maverick, “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’.”  Be honest, now.  How many of you guessed the lark because you thought of the one learning to pray in “The Sound of Music” instead of the one waking up in the meadow?
  2. A — young Stephen Sondheim, a close friend of the Hammerstein family, worked as a “gofer” on Allegro.  Who can say what kind of ideas evolved from that experience?
  3. B — Cable hands over his grandfather’s watch (the one that saw his ancestor safely through the Spanish-American war; you knew he was doomed as soon as he gave that up.  Survival 101 — do not lose lucky family heirlooms!), but Bloody Mary stomps on it.  Luther covets the boar’s tooth necklace; Bloody Mary’s skin is as tender as DiMaggio’s glove and she charges “fo’ dolla’” for her goods; and Nellie is as normal as blueberry pie.  Not that you would find blueberries on a South Pacific Island.
  4. D — “Edelweiss” was the last lyric Hammerstein wrote.
  5. E — the two songs recycled in State Fair were cut from Oklahoma!

1

The year 1996 saw State Fair, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1945 movie musical (itself remade in 1962 with new songs by Rodgers) revised into a stage production.

To eke out the score, cut songs from other shows by the duo were added to the two movie scores.  What show was the original source for “When I Go Out Walking with My Baby” and “Boys and Girls Like You and Me?”

A.)  Allegro

B.)  Carousel

C.)  Me and Juliet

D.)  Pipe Dream

E.)  Oklahoma!

The Sound of Music (1959) would be Rodgers and Hammerstein’s last show; Hammerstein died of stomach cancer the following year.

The story of the Von Trapp family singers starred Mary Martin and was a smash, while the 1965 movie with Julie Andrews was an even greater success.  What was the last lyric Hammerstein wrote?

A.)  ”Do-Re-Mi”

B.)  ”Climb Ev’ry Mountain”

C.)  ”The Sound of Music”

D.)  ”Edelweiss”

E.)  ”The Lonely Goatherd”

1949’s South Pacific returned the pair to the heights, capturing the Pulitzer for drama and running 1,925 performances.

Based on James Michener’s stories, it concerns the romance between a navy nurse, Nellie Forbush (Mary Martin), and a French plantation owner, Emile de Becque (opera star Ezio Pinza).  The subplot involves the tragic love affair of a young officer (William Tabbert) for an island girl (Betta St. John).  What does Lt. Cable try to give Bloody Mary (Juanita Hall) after he renounces Liat?

A.)  a boar’s tooth necklace

B.)  his grandfather’s watch

C.)  DiMaggio’s glove

D.)  ”fo’ dolla’”

E.)  a blueberry pie?

2

Allegro (1947) is sometimes described as the first concept musical, telling the life story of Joseph Taylor, Jr., from birth to tough career choices in his mid-thirties.

It used a constant Greek chorus, continuous action, and had no real sets, just props and furniture whisked on and off via treadmills.  And, as one might have expected with Agnes de Mille as director, it had four big ballets.  Audiences and critics didn’t take well to it, and do to its enormous operating costs, it lost money despite a decent run of 315 performances.  Who was a “gofer” (general assistant) for the show, though he was only in his teens?

A.)  Stephen Sondheim

B.)  Fred Ebb

C.)  Joe Layton

D.)  Cy Coleman

E.)  Michael Stewart

What is there to say about Oklahoma! (1943)?

It marked a watershed in musical theatre history.  Even poor souls who know next to nothing about musicals have heard of it.  Richard Rodgers’ folksy melodies and Oscar Hammerstein’s easy, conversational lyrics helped give this tale of cowboys and farmers it’s naturalistic feel.  Which of the following critters is not found in Oklahoma! (the show, not the state)?

A.)  a hawk

B.)  a lark

C.)  rams and ewes

D.)  a field mouse

E.)  a little brown maverick

Admin Post: Hi guys!

This is Amanda, one of your admins for the Stage portion of this blog and I realized I’ve sort of been neglecting this site and I apologize for that, to the followers and any other admins that are hanging around.

However, I am going to try and fix that.  :)

That being said, I bought a book of Broadway Trivia a couple of days ago and I was wondering if you guys would be interested in maybe if, say, in the morning I were to post a batch of questions and then that would indicate what I’d be posting for the next day or so?

Or do any of you have any ideas as to how we can make this better for you guys?
